30 Sergeant Wallace Llewellyn Berry RCAF was KIA on 14/15 August 1941 on the operation on Magdeburg when he was flying as tail gunner on Pilot Officer Ronald Lisle’s crew. All the crew were killed.

32 It was a German destroyer which was passing near the Isle d’ Yeu and believing itself about to be attacked began evasive action and opened fire. However, as soon as it was realized that it was not the target it radioed the course and size of the formation to the shore facilities.

33 This is possibly Pilot Officer Harold Walter Stone DFM. He and Sergeant Peter George Bolton are the only two members on 35 Squadron who were killed on 24 July other than the four on Flight Sergeant Godwin’s crew. Another clue is that Richard Rivaz referred to the sergeants on his crew by their surname and his fellow officers by their Christian names, i.e. ‘Nick’ and ‘Gerry’.

34 L9512/U on 35 Squadron was hit by flak and was finished off by a Bf l09 and left to crash in the sea, just north of the Ile de Ré. Flight Sergeant S. D. Greaves and his crew all survived as PoWs. 76 Squadron lost three: L9494 was first hit by flak then finished off by a Bf 109, Squadron Leader W. Williams ditching it near La Rochelle, the crew being rescued by a French fishing boat only to be made PoWs; Pilot Officer Joseph F. P. J. McKenna’s L9517 was shot down by flak and also crashed off La Rochelle, killing all on board; Flight Lieutenant Austin Ellerker Lewin’s L9529 was shot down by fighters near Vendee at l’Aiguillon-sur-Mer. Lewin and four of the crew were killed; three men were taken prisoner. Flight Sergeant Clarence Arthur Godwin’s L9527/M, seriously damaged by flak, was attacked by three Bf 109s over the town of Angles, where it went down in a slow spiral with smoke coming from one or two of its engines. Only two parachutes emerged before the Halifax crashed 15 km (9.32 miles) from the town of Lucon. One Halifax on 35 Squadron landed safely but was so badly damaged it was written-off as Damaged Beyond Repair (DBR). Five more were damaged to the extent that they required approximately three weeks to repair, while two others were damaged to a lesser degree. The remaining two suffered only superficial damage.
